locked door 200

I have a 1992 240 and the drivers side rear door wont't open. It looks and feels like it is locked. The unlock knob (either engaged manually or electronically) doesn't feel like its engaging. I suspect that its become detached from the lock/unlock system, and is in a permanent locked state.

What would be a suggestion to remedy this? I can't remove the door panel when its closed, of course. I guess I could pay a locksmith to use the flat spatula-like tool to open the door, but that doesn't appeal to my shadetree mechanic ideology.

Any suggestions?

steve
