Main fuel pump ?- 1985 240 DL 200

Hi there all...its me again...my car starts fine and idles pretty good (someties a little rough, missing/surging) but holding steady throttle above idle and at other positions while in neutral a miss/surge unsteady engine speed is prevalent. The car often lacks power on the highway particularly going uphill....Im thinking that the main fuel pump may be starting to pack it in. I have new plugs and wires, new air cleaner, new fuel filter, new in tank pre-pump, new coil, replaced the ECU and fuel injector relay; I also checked out the cat and it is fine (no broken pieces blocking the exhaust). I have recently adjusted the timing. Things improved for a short spell once I put the new fuel filter in but its back to its old tricks again now. Prior to dropping $200 on a new main electric fuel pump Im looking for a few opinions on if this is the likely problem or not. I live in an area where there is NO Volvo dealership to take the thing to for a quick diagnosis.
