240 DL - compatibility range 200

Dear Volvo Lovers,

My daughter has a 1988 240 DL wagon that just got into an accident that may end up being the last hurrah for the car, depending upon what the other driver's insurance company does. If the car must go, I wanted to replace it with another Volvo 240 DL wagon. the 1988 has many new parts, including tires, all new brakes, etc. My question is, how far forward can I come in model years into the 1990s and still be able to use the spare parts we can scavange from the damaged car before sending her to the boneyard. At what point in time does the 240 DL wagon become so different that older parts just won't be useful?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Regards,

Gene Smelik
