if valve clearance gets too far off, you will get near 0 MPG.
If your engine is propperly tuned, the only thing unplugging the O2 sensor will do is light the check engine lamp. I have never had a problem with this, but 'they' say not to connect or disconnect sensors with the key on.
I beleive replacement intervals for O2 sensor is 36K on cars with teh periodic maintainance lamp.
