740 stalling while driving, alternator draining battery? 700 1989

740 volvo stalled while driving, would not turn back on,I took battery off from volvo, put it on my vw and drove for 20 mins. Installed the battery back on volvo this morning turned on without problems, turned it off after 4 minutes, would not turn back on. Did the same thing as yesterday, charged the battery on vw, this time I turned my 740 and left engine running for 15-20 minutes, then it stalled. Could it be the alternator as the battery will not have enough juice to start the vw, after the 740 stalls. Is almost if the 740 is draining the battery after 15-20 mins. It is a 5 speed transmission, I thought once you get the engine started it would not stall even if the battery was dead? Any suggetsions? Thanks! I appreciate it
