ignition switch grounding 700 1989

I had to replace the ignition switch last night and I wonder if the metal body has to be grounded, as it is frightfully cold I don't want to stick my hands in the dash to attach the switch to the key I wonder if I can just leave the switch hanging and start it with a screwdriver till it warms up, or di U have to ground the switch body ?? -36c this am
