A quick question on re-torquing rear suspension parts 200 1990

Bentley says I should drop the car and have it rest on the axle before torquing it to spec. Seems a little tight for me to crawl under the car, even if I did, just doesn't seem like there is enough space for turnig the torque wrench. Can I just jack the axle on the bell housing, while the car is on jack stands, but not exactly lifting it so it is off the stands? What do you all suggest?

Cheers,
SM
