My brick suddenly has a jet engine

This happens almost every winter - my car emits what can best be described as a jet-engine-like sound while driving, especially at highway speeds. When I decelerate, the sound lowers in pitch in relation to the car's cruising speed. This sound happens even when coasting with the clutch pushed-in and the engine at idle-speed. It's hard to determine where the sound is originating from since it can be quite loud.

I've owned two other 240s and they all have made this sound when driving in extreme cold.

It sounds kinda neat, but where is it coming from and is it something to worry about?
