tyre size 444-544

Now it won’t be too long anymore before my conversion project (B20F/M40 in PV444) will be finished, so the time has come to think about tyres. I would like 165R15 whitewalls for original looks, but on the other hand, wider tyres will give better roadholding (and heavier steering...), in which case the wheels will have to be widened or non original ones will have to be fitted. Until now I have only driven 20 miles with the car after I bought it two years ago and before I took it off the road for the conversion. Among the things I have fitted were Bilsteins and an IPD front sway bar. Yet I’m not too sure about stability in strong cross winds with 165 tyres, given the shape of the car and the relatively small front and rear track. I have the feeling I can profit from your experiences and as new tyres are rather expensive, I would like to hear your advise. Stick with 165R15 or forget about it and choose f.i. 185/70 or anything else?
