What the heck could this have been? 200 1990

I drove my 240 to the store and all seemed fine. After leaving the store, I start her up, and there was this horrible squealing noise....it was definitely linked to engine RPM. Sounded like belt slip or something of that sorts. It's bloody cold here...wind chill factor of like -20F or colder. So I pull over and let it idle and the squeal was just as loud (or louder than when driving). Shut the engine off, let it sit for a few minutes...start her up...and all's fine again. So, what the heck was that?

TIA!
