What's the deal with convex mirrors? 200

I heard something about convex side rear-view mirrors being available "not in the U.S." Was this part a feature of European Volvos only? What exactly are they? Is there any way to get them in the U.S. (easily)? Do they easily install on U.S. cars? Are all U.S. mirrors completely flat?

I think I've come across a brief reference to them. While looking over some big Volvo cars history thing, one of the developments for a year in the '80s was the introduction of convex mirrors. It said something about "increased safety" though a wider angle of viewing. I think it was a 240 in the relevant picture, and so I'm guessing that it is exactly what these "convex mirrors" are.
