Oil in the coolant in 3.0L engine 900 1991

Hi
i just came across this very lukrative offer. It is a 1991 960 wagon for just 250£ !!. Whats wrong is, that the owner did not use it for one year, started it, and now there is oil in the water. volvo suspects the headgasket-- but is this a common problem?
I am asking this because i am only familiar with all the 4 cylinder engine but have no experience wiht the 6 cylinder 3.0L.
