used transmissions / shop protocols

sorry for 2 posts in a row - another post on used parts...

used is obviously fine in some cases but when it comes to transmissions I'd want to consider all options. Anyway, I had a shop put in a new clutch but there were complications from running the throwout bearing dry (the throwout bearing or something related to its movement was actually fused/welded to the input shaft! - something like that) - he basically said he would throw in another transmission - (used for 450.00 - not bad). Do they even record miles on used trans. or is it worth considering the $ for a rebuilt? It shifts better than the old one but still not real smooth into 1st and 2nd. I know these units all last a long time but shouldn't a shop a least give you options on something you're stuck with 'til the car dies? I think I will give Redline products a try anyway.
