1030/1031/1041 rear axle - differential interchange 900

Can anybody tell me whether the differential from a 1041 (965) axle will fit directly into the 1030 axle housing so I can keep the original gearset?

My original 1990 1030 type (non-locking) rear has 3.73 gears. I'd like to put the ALD into the car. I found a 1041 rear from a 960 wagon for a good price, however it's got 3.31 gears. The complete axle assembly is a drop-in, but I tow with my car and would like to keep the lower ratio.
