when to use rtv/silicone? 700

Generally, I feel the stuff is safe to use, if used sparingly. I apply a very thin layer to both sides of the gasket (water pump and valve cover), just enough to seal, but not enough that any excess squeezes out during tightening. I also let the stuff dry overnight before adding fluids. When I got the 240, there were big gobs of blue rtv all around and in the WP and VC...the guy must have had stock in silicone the way he used it on this car...
