240 Front Springs - when they go bad .... ? 200 1988

From the 700/900 board, I know that their front springs tend to elongate when they go soft, but although I've had quite a few 140s and 240s, I have never had that happen or heard that it does. A friend just got an 88 244DL, and from the pix either the rears have collapsed or the fronts have expanded, but its hard to tell...
Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks ...
