need help - strange screeching noise @ idle or 900-1200 rpm 900

my '91 940 turbo has developed a strange screeching noise when idling or punching it and just coming off idle. disconnected alternator and a/c belts
and still made noise, replaced water pump today. still makes the noise.
I suspect timing belt tensioner, p/s pump and turbo. Its weird, loud in front
of engine but unable to pinpoint it. I listened inside timing cover plug, p/s
pump + turbo areas and its not obvious. I'll probably take belts off again
tomorrow and run it to make sure its not p/s pump. has anyone had p/s pump make
howling / screeching noises??

any ideas?
