960 main/rod bearings dying? 900

Hi there.
I'm worried I have just run into a big problem. This afternoon I started my 960 and noticed a sharp pinging sound coming from the engine. The sound gets faster with increasing rpms. I didn't drive it anywhere after hearing it, and I'm positive it wasn't making this sound yesterday.

So having heard this sound several cars/years ago, it immediately reminded me of a rod bearing about to die. Any chance it could be something else? I wish it was just the valves ticking, but my engine has never made that sound before...

If that's what it is, what am I looking at in terms of damage? I haven't driven it since I heard it today. Would it be safe to drive it 15 miles to my mechanic? Will replacing the bearings fix this, or will other components be worn down also needing replacement? Cost estimate? :(

I welcome all replies, if anyone has any kind of insight to share, please do so.

Is this common on the B6304?

Thanks
