Question on removing the crank-shaft pulley 200 1990

Hi all,
Can I use an electric impact wrench on the bolt? That way I probably don't need the Pulley holder from IPD. A buddy of mine who has worked on cars (since the day he was born!) claims that's what he used to do on all his previous cars that needed a timing belt. He also mentioned jamming the flywheel with a screwdriver, as some of you have done here.

Thanks,
SM
