high idle when cold ( 2500-3000) 700 1988

i live in eastern canada. pretty cold this time of year. i have a 1988 740 turbo. when i first start it in the morning it reves up to between 2500&3000 which i don't think is very good for the engine. (415,000)on engine. it reves like that for about 3 to 4 minutes then settles down to about 750-800. starts and idles fine for rest of the day. has anyone out there had similar problem.thanks for any ideas.
