240 Temp Spike again... 200 1986

I've read a bit this morning regarding the temp spiking. My '86 240 DL wagon started spiking over the weekend. It's pretty cold where I am, and I don't think my engine is overheating. After about 5 minutes, the guage goes to the red and stays there for the entire trip. I'm getting heat in the car and my engine isn't showing any signs of overheating. I can't get it to the shop until later this week and wondered if it is just the sensor, is the engine harmed in any way?

thanks in advance
butch
