960 will not fire 900 1994

You know you've got problems when the mechanic shrugs his shoulders. My 1994 960 with 156,000 has been running perfect until this morning when it cranked and cranked but would not start. The timing belt is perfect, it has tons of spark and fuel, but when the mechanic ran a compression check, the best cylinder was 85 and the average of the others was 50 which makes no sense as the car has been running great, and using or burning no oil whatsoever. Any ideas?
