1983 With Chrysler Ignition Detonates (pings) 200

Gentlemen,
My Dads 83 with Chrysler Ignition pings under hard acceleration and up hills.. The timing is set correct and the Vacuun Hoses are correct according to the underhood sticker. I checked the timing advance and it is correct (according to Chilton Professional Manual). The car runs great except for the pinging. The only time it doesn't ping is when 89 octane is used. 89 is too expensive. It is an automatic with higher compression. Any suggestions to stop the pinging?
Thank You.
