$4000 Serpentine Belt for S-90 S90-V90

I do not understand what happend and no one seems to able to give a decent explanation, including Volvo of America.
On a 1998 S-90 a serpentine belt broke at start up. The belt wrapped around the crank shaft. This is no really a big deal, except when the serp belt broke the dealer claims it broke the timing belt. (I saw the timing belt on the car in one piece). I am being told that the head must be replaced. The problem I have is that if a simple thing like a broken serp belt can cause this type of damage. The car was not running on the highway, it was just on an intial start. The serp belt had 5000 miles on it and the timming belt had 19,000 miles. Both Volvo belts bought from the dealer.
If this is the damage an accessory drive belt can cause to the Volvo engine, I must question the engineering for this engine. I have Volvo looking into this matter and I will post their explanation. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.
