Hi fellow Brickers,
I fitted a M46 behind my B18 using a B23 bellhousing. The tranny was sitting on a slant. Using this setup I experienced some very weird problems. Have a glance at some of the previous posts:

Basically the story is that the gearbox ‘hummed’ and the dif and support bearing turned hot. After checking litteraly everything, I wasn’t able to locate the cause of this hum and the hot dif. But I noticed while turn hard left the hum disapeared, while turning hard right the hum increased. Only driving 120 km/h would still give a hum.
I figured that certain internal parts in the M46 didn’t like sitting on a slant, so I fitted a M47 (only has round things (without up or down) in it). But, damned, the same thing happened.
So I borrowed a rare 240series bellhousing so I could fit the M47 straight up, being sure I got rid of the problems that way. And indeed, just about all of the ‘humming’ disapeared, exept for the hum at 120 km/h…
Right now I’m at the point where I’m thinking of trashing the lott (writing down these few sentences is a LOT easier then taking swapping gearboxes, bellhouisings, welding support arms, welding gearsticks, etc etc… (aaaaaaah!))
So here’s my question:
Since I have been changing and swapping the complete drivetrain several times I excluded all that can cause ‘hums’. The only two things that can cause this are (in my opinion):
-unbalance in the engine (flywheel or so)
-combination B18/20 and M46/47 is not supposed to work out (although I’ve seen it done before)
Help…..
Ben
