When I posted that prior message giving the dimensions as 1.6" square, it wasn't a guess -- I walked downstairs to my basement, where I have the brand-new, never used hitch right there on top of some tires. I measured it, and I-kid-you-not, the inside dimensions are 1.6" square!
On closer inspection, the hitch's permanent label reads, "made in Sweden by VBG...[can't read the rest of the swedish]", and it also shows Volvo part no. 9166557. There is also a paper label (from Volvo N.A.) taped to another part of the hitch showing p/n 9166519, but I don't know what this is for (I think it's for the mounting bolts' kit).
And, the hitch was ordered for my '93, but I'm sure it fits any '86-on 240.

Can't explain why your hitch is 2x2", but it isn't like mine.
