What's this part off the engine between the oil filter and the alternator? 200

What’s this part off the engine between the oil filter and the alternator? Its round and it sticks off the side of the engine at an angle, and has two posts off the top of it for wire connections (one post is broken, this is why I am asking about it). This wire has been disconnected for some time and the car runs fine. I have consulted the Bentley, but since I know nothing of what the piece does it is not much help. I’m sure a lot of you out there no exactly what this piece is. By the way I beleive my engine is a B230F-T

On another matter I simply need to vent that I just replaced the gasket on my water pump and as soon as I filled the coolant system it started leaking, presumably from the hose at the back of the pump. I am quite pissed as I made sure to seal all the gaskets with high temp sealant and now I have a leak. In a word, disappointing.
Thank you for letting me vent, no one else around here knows the troubles of a do-it-yourself job gone wrong.
