A/C conversion questions 200 1986

last year I had my indie mechanic work on my A/C. He replaced the compressor and the high pressure hose. at the time I asked about having it switched to R134 since I was changing compressor and seemed like the appropriate time. He talked me out of it saying the molecule size was smaller than R12 and my old system could end up leaking badly. As I ended up putting a lot of new components in at the time, am I giving up the ease and lower cost of recharging needlesly?
