Gear shift boot on M-47 II -- how to remove ? 200 1989

I would like to remove my boot, but there are retaining plastic clips both in front and in back of it. It slides off easily on the side, but I don't know how to remove the plastic thingy and I don't want to break them.

I need to remove the boot in order to adjust the detente plate and hopefully find it easier to shift into 1st -- right arm getting a work-out right now and stressed out at red lights and stop sign that I won't make it into 1st!

For now I go into 2nd gear before shifting into 1st, but soccer moms are getting impatient in the suburbs.

Just changed my tranny fluid -- fresh Castrol ATF type F with overfill, maybe next year I'll try RedLine.

Thanks.
