1991 Volvo 740 Wagon Stalls When Underbody gets Wet - Faulty O2 sensor?? 700 1991

This happened twice in the slush wet driving this winter ... while driving
the car loses power and stalls. Starting is difficult with no power and re stall when put in gear...after about 5 mins it starts and holds under load.
I took it in to my trusty mechanic who assured me...that there was no way it could be the O2 sensor or connector...and he dropped a new set of plugs in the engine..all was well until I took the beast to the carwash yesterday and geez it wouldn't start..this after I soaked the bottom of the car to get all the dirt and salt off....again it was hard to start, misfired, backfired, stalled
until everything dried out and warmed back up (?)...which has got me thinking
the O2 sensor (replaced last spring) either has a leak in the seal or the connector's gone bad... anyone seen this??

thx
dana
