Putting a 1989 AW auto tras in a 1988 700

Hi all:

The AW trans in my 88 740 (non-turbo 8-valve) wagon seems to be kaput. It's leaking a lot of oil from the bell housing area and won't go into reverse, even with the oil topped up. Also slow in going into top gear. I have an 89 parts car (non-turbo 8-valvesedan) with a good trans, and my question is, will the 89 trans fit the 88. I've heard the 89s have a crank sensor thing on the top, and I don't need that on the 88, but hopefully it won't get in the way. Any suggestinons appreciated. thanks to everybody for being there. jim dunne
