Coil 140-160

Hi. I use a Bosch coil on my 122 (B18 engine, similar to B20 from the point of the ignition gadgets, of course with less cc and hp). Both, blue and red bosch coils run great on my car (red need external resistor, and due its twice power of the blue (a advantage), need change points to electronic stuff, otherwise the points will be eroded at supersonic speed).

On my case, the red one help me to cut the crap trought the salad made by local gasoline on a high compression engine (with blue, I suffer from oiled spark plugs, and if I lean the mixture to correct it, I have a very bad idle).

A bit of caution: on 2002, some car discussion groups on internet inform about too fast overheating on new mexican made blue coils (bosch coils are made on many countries today). Local mechanics (here) confirm this behavoir. Due it, I suggest to use a brazilian made one (or if available on your city, a german made).

On the 122 you need to make and place a metalic bracket for it, but on 140s I understand it is a direct replacement (due I not own a 140, please, somebody with a 140, confirm or denied this last statement).

VW Beetle part supplies have the blue coils as a standard part, also, if you want, they have it on chromed fashion (by example, see catalog www.empius.com).

If you want to change coil, and your ignition wires are 4 or more years old, would be a good idea to change it also.

Happy coiling
