flathood conversion... now what? 200 1984

OK, so the grille came, it's not an 83 flathood grille, but a late 70's grill, and i'm picking up the hood this weekend. Sooo, am i just supposed to cut off the outsides of the grill w/ a skill saw or something? what is the best way to attach this doohickey? Should I crop off the sides and reattach the screw holes, or just chop it off and drill holes in it to bolt it on? if that's the case, should i lop off the pegs and reattach them when i put the grill in? Has anyone actually done this, or did i just waste $50?
