Turning crank for valve adjustment. 140-160 1972

I tried to adjust the valves on my B20F yesterday, but I have a double crank pulley because of the A/C, and cannot get a wrench in from the top. The only way to turn the crank is from the bottom, and I can't watch for lifters going up and down. Is there a tip or trick that can make this a one man job?
