Float bowl leak. 120-130

Today I was working on the choke mechanisms on the SUs. I took them apart, cleaned, polished, oiled, bla bla. I'm nearly certain I put everthing back together as I took it apart. Reverse order, as they say...
When I fired it up I noticed gas pouring out the bottom of one of the float bowls. Tried to fix it while on car - no dice. Took carbs off again and put a "known good" fitting at the end of the fuel tube into the float bowl. I used a little plumbers tape (what?!?). After reassembling I fired it up again and again observed the very same leak.
So as to keep this carb-changing routine from being a way of life I thought I would post this to solicite any and all opinions and tech help in order to do right the next time, if not the first time.
What's the prescribed manner of reataching the tube to the float bowl?
I do have some old carbs I can take parts from.
Thanks.
