Weird hose coming out of rear axle? 200 1986

So today I'm replacing the brake line to my left rear caliper and I notice a clear rubber hose which comes out of the top of the rear axle about 6 inches away from the differential. It is a couple feet long, and is not attached to anything on the car. I couldn't see any obvious place to fit the hose....anyone know? is it some sort of oil feed tube, or what? Thanks for any help...bentley didn't say anything on this that I could find.
