possible lawn mower syndrome, but...? 200 1988

my 240 wagon wouldnt start this a.m., after i ran it briefly yesterday while washing it in semi-cold weather. followed the advice on the board and eventually got it started, but am uncertain about the oil. I'm sure i must have flooded the engine at one point, so should i assume the oil bad and change it? some advised running at high rpms for a while, but when this happened my tank was bone dry and im unsure if and/or how this complicated things. the symptoms fit LMS (turned over, wouldnt start, could smell gas) but i eventually got it started simply by cleaning the spark plugs and letting it sit for a bit with them out, rather than cranking with the pedal floored. Thoughts?
