82 & 84 245GLTs always richen - they don't hold the fuel mixture 200 1982

Got a weird problem with my cars - my mechanic sets the fuel mixture properly but they always tend to richen-out on their own over the course of a few weeks. My 82 just had it adjusted yesterday and after today's driving, it was so rich that it backfired on deceleration and spit black soot out it's tailpipe. The 82 just had it's warm up regulator replaced. The 84's warm up regulator is original, but it did need an idle control valve. Anybody know why my cars keeping going super-rich all on their own?
