small tach install questions 200

I ordered a small tacho for my '88 240 today. I know that the red and white wire in the harness plugs into it. I however, have mixed messages on other wires. The guy who sold it too me told me just to plug in the red and white wire, but I have heard there a multiple places to plug in other wires on this. I now have no idea as to what I should do! If other plugins are neccesary, will I find the wires for under the dash? What is the red and white wire that I have found. What will light this. I had no idea that this would be so hard to install!
