I just replaced the Gabriel brand strut cartridges and rear shocks on our 1984 242. The 242 has 144,xxx miles, and I don't know how many miles were on the front strut cartridges, but they were totally worn out. The strut cartidges were completely loose and had absolutley no resistance to movement. From my experience I would not use Gabriel shocks/strut cartridges at all.
