front end noise 900

Greetings, I searched the archive but didn't find an answer to this problem.

1991 940 SE, 165,000 k.m., experiencing a periodic metalic grinding noise ONLY when the car turns to the left. This morning I noticed the noise when turning to the right. My wife heard it briefly while going straight (guess that just about covers it eh!)

No shimmy, no shake, no rattles, brake feel and sound normal, can't see anything in the wheel wells. Impossible to discern if its from the right or left side.

Car is going to my mechanic tomorrow. Any ideas? I assume it may be brake related, given the metal on metal nature of the sound.

Thanks
Mike
