I think a large throat carb won't give you much advantage, especially
if it is split between cylinders like you'd have to have with a twin SU
setup. The larger the throat, the lower the velocity of the air going
into the cylinders at lower RPMs so you'll have less torque at the low
end; this is assuming everything is designed correctly; more likely it
will result in things just running poorly all around. It will, however,
flow more air at higher RPMs which potentially will allow for more power
at WOT at high RPMs. Webers get around this by having smaller orifices
but with 4 of them. Also, because webers have the throttle valve very
close to the intake valve, they have better throttle response.
The large throat SUs were typically used on 4.2 liter I6 jag motors
and may have been used in other larger displacement british cars.
If you want to make a cool induction system, I'd suggest using 4 small
motorcycle carbs. I suspect that the ideal intake manifold setup would
have something similar to the weber carb throttles leading into a large
chamber like on the D-jet manifolds, only using slide throttle valves
instead of butterfly valves.
