Zenith carb leak 1800 1969

When attempting to start my newly-acquired 69 for the first time in decades (I found it in an old dairy barn literally buried in straw), gas poured out of one of the Zenith carbs right underneath the air cleaner and into the throat of the carb, drowning the engine. It appears to come from a metal tube of about 1/8 inch inside diameter. There were no hoses attatched to it or to the same tube on the other carb, which does not exhibit the same problem. I know I have a carb rebuild in my future, but is it worth it? What are the advantages of the stock Zenith carbs over, say an IPD-Weber?
