Cruise Control question 700 1989

I was wondering when the cruise control stops working what is the most common thing that goes bad, because my cruise stopped working a little while ago and we had an auto shop look at it.and they couldnt figure out what it was. Not a big deal, i could go with out it, but since i just got my brake lights working i was just wondering about the cruise control.
