Overdrive installation 1800 1973

I am converting from auto to an M41. I pulled the OD apart to replace O-rings and inspect everything and ended up only disassemblying the front section. I am ready now to reinstall the unit onto the transmission but can't get the grooves in the OD to line up so the splines in the drive shaft can go in fully. I read somewhere about using a long screwdriver to do this, but the front and back sections don't seem to move in relation to each other. What am I doing wrong?
