I must assume you have never had a classic car as this before.
First, inquire of the owner as to any modifications.
Second, take or arrange to purchase there, all components of a tune-up (oil, filters-esp. gas-, points, rotor, cap, wires, etc...), top up all the fluids. Also, change the coolant and perform a valve adjustment. If you have a uni-syn balance the carbs and tune as if they were never done and put in the appropriate amount of oil. Check the timing (good luck getting a timing gun through airport security, lol).
If the owner says the tires are "new" you should be OK. If he is at all "iffy" on the tires then arrange to have new ones put on very near to where you pick up the car.
The modifications are important when you are sourcing parts and to have an idea what has gone wrong with it in the past (potential trouble spots).
Oh, yeah, do yourself a favor and check the brakes before going anywhere!
