OD Problem

I just don't know that they are. I suppose one possibility is that the transmission oil cooler is leaking into the cooling system, and you could theoretically be losing transmission fluid into the radiator. But I'm not convinced. Definately top up the tranny fluid and see if it works. Carefully track the fluid level just in case there is a major leak. Check the fluid to make sure there isn't any coolant in the transmission. You probably should consider a transmission flush, easy to do yourself: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionAuto.htm#7XX940FluidFlush

At any rate, check your coolant for the presence of oil (transmission fluid). Putting in a new radiator isn't difficult. You can get them online for about $140; I got one for $120 at a local radiator shop here in Greenville. I'd get an all metal radiator. Put in a new thermostat while your at it; cheap and easy to do. Check the radiator and heater hoses and the heater valve, too.

If you have a rear main seal leak, you may have excess crankcase pressure. Most likely caused by clogged crankcase ventillation system. Known as a "flame trap" in volvo language, it serves a similar function to the pcv valve in other cars. A good discussion of all this is located in the FAQs--http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineSealsBeltsVent.htm#Crankcase_Ventilation_%20A_Treatise

Clean/replace your flame trap and the tubes and hoses and nipples connected to the system. Often thats enough to reduce the pressure on the seals and eliminating or reducing the leak. These systems are often missed by an unknowlegable previous owner or non-volvo mechanic.

I'm figuring your volvo is new to you. You might find it interesting to check out the preventive maintenance in the FAQs; there is also a neat guide to what to do when you get a used volvo to get it up to snuff. http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/HighMileageVehiclePrevMaint.htm

Hope this helps. Going to be nice weather here in NC this weekend, so you can get some work done on the car! Post again if you have other questions.
