Hey All:
I was here a few months back complaining about an idle problem. I proceeded to ignore it for reasons financial but now it has raised its ugly head again, and I actually have some money to try and fix it. Not to mention it's super annoying.
Basically, it hunts for a normal idle when the engine is cold. When it's warm it sits around 1000 RPM to 1200RPM, which I know is high, but at least it's not hunting. Recently it was nearly stalling as it hunted (red idiot lights flashed on and off), which prompted me to order from FCPGroton a new Idle Air Valve, CIS motor, or whatever you wish to call the silver canister that sits atop the '81 engines (and turbos of that era, too, apparently). I installed it and the only difference it has made is that the car seems to hunt more smoothly, i.e. no more near stalling and the range of high to low is smaller. But still my problem does not go away! I thought this part was faulty, and the culprit. No!
Last fall I completely cleaned out the throttle body, put a new flametrap in, replaced all relevant seals, had the injectors cleaned and replaced injector seals. No obvious vacuum leaks that I can find and as I say after the car is warm there is never any hunting. All that work did nothing to solve the hunting problem. I'm at a loss and nearly ready to take my poor girl to the local Volvo doctor to get her squared away.
