oil pressure 85 740turbo 700

Hello
The oil light is coming on at low to moderate (1000-2500)rpm on my 740t when it is well warmed up - doesnt come on before. This seems symptomatic of a failing oil pump. What else might cause this? How big of a job is changing the pump? I dont want to go to a ton of effort as the car is a junker and the engine over 250k. My cruddy manual seems to indicate that it will require a hoist - could the engine be lifted somehow with a jack?
thanks
aaron
