temp guage won't work 200

I have inherited my son's 86 240 DL. I've tried to get it running "up to snuff" for him, but I guess he got tired of waiting, so he gave it to me. He said the temp guage worked part of the time, but I can't get it to work at all. I put in a new sending unit, but that did'nt work, so I grounded the wire off the sending unit, and the guage does nothing. I checked the continuity of the wire from the dash to the sending unit and the wire isn't broken. I'm assuming my dash guage is bad. Any ideas? Thanks...Craig
